Wal-Mart stops selling kids CD with profanities

Christina Wilson was getting her 4-year-old son up from a nap and bringing him in to listen to a compact disc his grandparents had given him for Christmas when her husband stopped her — he thought he heard something inappropriate. Then Wilson listened to the "Kids Favorites" CD out of her son Caiden's earshot and heard the profanity. "It was a shock," she said. Wilson said that on Tuesday she contacted the Wal-Mart store in South Bend where her in-laws had bought the CD to let them know about the lyrics. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. spokeswoman Melissa Hill said the company had already started pulling the CDs from its shelves nationwide on Monday after a supplier notified it about a problem with the CD. "When we learned of a CD that could appeal to children included songs with profanity, we took immediate action to begin removing the product from our store shelves," Hill said. "We are working with our supplier to investigate this matter fu...

Brett Favre dances to 'Ice, Ice Baby' at Vikings practice

Alright, stop. Collaborate and listen. Favre is back with a brand new invention. Something grabs a hold of him tightly, flows like a harpoon, concussed, yet still sprightly. Here's a video of Brett Favre (notes) dancing to "Ice Ice Baby" at Minnesota Vikings practice this week, much to the delight of his stretching teammates:  All things considered, 2010 has been a pretty miserable year for Favre. He started on top, winning a playoff game and taking the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC Championship, but once there he threw a crippling interception. Eventually he re-retired, was coerced into returning to the Vikings in the summer, got caught up in a sordid scandal, played some of the worst football of his career, had this record streak of consecutive starts snapped and then was fined $50,000 for the aforementioned scandal. If anyone could use some dance-induced catharsis headed into 2011, it's Favre.  And to ensure your 2011 isn't like Favre's 2010,...

IRS: Val Kilmer owes $500K in back taxes (AP)

SANTA FE, N.M. - Val Kilmer owes nearly $500,000 in federal taxes, and a lien has been placed on the "Batman Forever" actor's property, including a New Mexico ranch he's trying to sell. The Internal Revenue Service filed the lien last month in Santa Fe for an assessment balance of $498,165 for 2008 income taxes. Kilmer has lived in New Mexico for two decades. He put his 5,300-acre Pecos River Ranch on the market for $33 million in 2009. The ranch is now listed for sale at $18.5 million, down from $23 million in October. Kilmer and his agent did not respond to telephone calls and e-mail on Thursday seeking comment. Kilmer also starred in movies including " Top Gun ." More on: Val Kilmer , Top Gun

John Mellencamp and wife separate after 20 years

In a post-holiday week that has seen several announcements of celebrity couplings, singer John Mellencamp and his wife Elaine have decided to do the opposite and separate. "John and Elaine Mellencamp are proud of their 20 years together and are very happy with their accomplishments both as parents and as a family. They will continue to raise their two children in Indiana but have decided to call it a day as a couple," their spokesman said in a statement on Thursday. No further details were available. Mellencamp gained fame in the late 1970s and early 1980s under the stage name John Cougar. His early rock hits include "Hurts So Good" and "Jack and Diane" and as his notoriety grew, he dropped the name Cougar and began performing as John Mellencamp. While he has never regained the superstar status he enjoyed during the '80s, Mellencamp has kept a solid fan base and continued to put out albums and tour around the world. His wife, whose ...

Ohio child cancers confound parents, investigators

CLYDE, Ohio – Every time his kids cough, Dave Hisey's mind starts to race. Is it cancer? Is it coming back? His oldest daughter, diagnosed with leukemia nearly five years ago when she was 13, is in remission. His 12-year-old son has another year of chemotherapy for a different type of leukemia. And his 9-year-old daughter is scared she'll be next. Hisey is not alone in fearing the worst. Just about every mom and dad in this rural northern Ohio town gets nervous whenever their children get a sinus infection or a stomachache lingers. It's hard not to panic since mysterious cancers have sickened dozens of area children in recent years. [ Related: 10 healthy New Year's resolutions ] Since 1996, 35 children have been diagnosed — and three have died — of brain tumors , leukemia, lymphoma, and other forms of cancer — all within a 12-mile wide circle that includes two small towns and farmland just south of Lake Erie. With many of the diagnoses coming between 2...
